The King of Kings
When Christ ascended to His Father after conquering sin, death, Satan, and hell, God crowned Him King of Earth. The psalmist pre-pictured this event with God putting His king upon the holy hill of Zion and declaring, “Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee” (Psalm 2:7; cf. Acts 13:33).
It was customary for kings to give to favored ones whatever they asked (cf. 1 Samuel 27:6; Esther 5:6; Matthew 14:7). God promised to give His Son “the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession” (Psalm 2:6–8). Since God owned the earth and its inhabitants, He gave it to Jesus as a victory present.
God kept that promise. After the resurrection, Jesus affirmed that He had all authority in heaven and on earth (Matthew 28:18). “Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him” (Hebrews 2:8).
